For early 2021, March 4 was a mean day. The US continued to soul-search within the aftermath of January 6. COVID vaccines have been being accredited and distributed all over the world. It was a Thursday.
Certainly, the day was unspectacular in nearly all respects, save one: it was the very best day ever for the voluntary carbon market.
With 8.5m tCO2e retired, March 4 noticed the most important variety of credit taken out of the VCM in a single day; it accounts for 1% of all VCM retirements, ever.
Since 2004, there have been almost 5,000 days of carbon offsetting exercise with no less than 1 tCO2e retired. On a mean day, going again to 2004, about 180,000 credit are retired; since 2020, the typical day sees almost 450,000 in retirements.
Total, there have been 165 days with greater than 1m+ tCO2e retired, most happening within the final two years:
This makes March 4, 2021 a formidable outlier: it could take nearly three weeks of (post-2020) common each day retirement exercise to equal the quantity of credit retired that day.
There are two tasks that drove the file quantity. The primary was Lowered Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary (Keo Seima), which retired greater than 5.7m tCO2e on March 4 — accounting for greater than 70% of all Keo Seima credit ever retired. The second mission was the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Mission, which retired over 2.1m tCO2e on that day.
The transactions from the tasks ranged from 1,000 to 350,000 tCO2e, with the bulk touchdown between 50,000 and 200,000 tCO2e.
Highlighting a difficulty with transparency within the VCM, the entire retirements that have been produced from the 2 tasks are nameless: not one of the 7.8m tCO2e have info stuffed in any of the retirement element fields.
