Summary:

Since 2013, my collaborators and I’ve performed analysis on how rumors and misinformation unfold by social media throughout disaster occasions. Lately, our work has revealed how a subsection of the choice media ecosystem facilitates the unfold of disinformation—within the type of conspiracy theories or “different narratives” about man-made disaster occasions. This disinformation is commonly employed as a part of political agendas and poses info safety dangers, partly by lowered belief in info techniques. On this speak, I’ll current highlights from our analysis on different narratives of disaster occasions, describing a few of the particular techniques and emergent results of disinformation. I’ll additionally share some preliminary findings on more moderen work analyzing the construction and dynamics of the media ecosystem that has taken form across the ongoing disaster in Syria—an ongoing “web site” of data warfare. Lastly, I’ll talk about a few of the broader implications of on-line disinformation for humanitarian responders, platform designers, and society at massive.


Bio: 

Kate Starbird is an Assistant Professor on the Division of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) on the College of Washington (UW). Kate’s analysis is located inside human-computer interplay (HCI) and the rising area of disaster informatics—the research of the how information-communication applied sciences (ICTs) are used throughout disaster occasions. One facet of her analysis focuses on how on-line rumors unfold—and the way on-line rumors are corrected—throughout pure disasters and man-made disaster occasions.
